On Sunday, February 11 2018, from 12pm- 1pm, join The Chi-Phi Chamber Players at The City Winery for “A Mix-Tape Romance”

As a starry-eyed lover puts together a mix-tape for the object of their affection, the Chi Phil Chamber Players share the journey of a relationship through varying musical genres in a Valentine’s treat to warm the heart.

Join the Chamber Players this Valentine’s Day weekend as they tell a tale of Frank’s clumsy search for love through unexpected musical selections. This performance, a witty and entertaining ode to romance, can be enjoyed by audiences indulging in a glass of wine or beautiful brunch available for purchase from City Winery Chicago.

All the romance and drama of a love story from beginning to end is told from the points of view of both the mix-tape creator and recipient, with selections that range from pop hits Mad World, In My Life and Creep to Gershwin’s melancholic Someone to Watch Over Me, and from traditional classics by Haydn, Schumann and Shostakovich to the haunting Viola Zombie by contemporary composer Michael Daugherty.

Will this Mix-Tape Romance end with happily ever after or heartbreak?

On the eve of the concert, this reviewer had the opportunity to interview Margaret Daly, cellist, about the concept for the program and the selections to be performed. Daly offered:

“The idea here is a lot of fun and a bit off-the-wall; it’s a theater piece/concert. Aurelien Pederzoli approached me about doing a ChiPhil program called ‘Mix-Tape’. I felt that there should be a narrator, somebody who creates a tape of music for somebody he admires. Our narrator, played by Frank Babbitt, pulls together an unusual selection and receives guidance from the quartet.” She added, “I wrote the script and submitted it to the others for their collaboration; all of us are pretty good friends who have worked together before.” Notes Daly, “Aurelien and I picked the selections in 20 minutes! The music we chose, using arrangements from a variety of sources, follows the roller-coaster mood of Frank’s emotions”.
